Introduction
In 2010, when the commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the 5th October 1910 Revolution takes place, the Assembleia da República is organising a number of initiatives to commemorate the establishment of the Republic in Portugal.
In the programme of the commemoration of the Republic 100 th Anniversary, we wish to highlight the International Congress on the First Republic in the scope of the Republics, the literary prize award on the Parliament and the Republic and the exhibition Res Publica: cidadania e representação política em Portugal 1820-1926 (Res Publica:citizenship and political representation in Portugal 1820-1926), co organized with the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (National Library of Portugal).
The Assembleia da República has also a collection of books specially related to the commemoration of the Republic 100 th Anniversary: the collection Parliamentarians of the First Republic, coordinated by Professor Luís Farinha, and the Dictionary of History of the First Republic and Republicanism, prepared by a committee composed of research centres on contemporary history from Portuguese universities and the Catholic University.
Furthermore,the Assembleia da República prepared other publications, namely the book addressed to the youngsters on the 5 th October and the First Republic by Ana Maria Magalhães and Isabel Alçada, and the books published within the framework of the protocol signed with the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal.
