The collections in the Assembleia da República contain one hundred and eleven negative images (1906-1924) of the Joshua Benoliel’s Archives.
Joshua Benoliel (1873-1932) is considered as the pioneer of the photographic reportage in Portugal and the greatest Portuguese photographer at the beginning of the 20 th century.
He covered the most important events of his time by accompanying king D.Carlos and king D. Manuel on their trips abroad, the 1910 Revolution, the monarchy revolts during the First Republic and the Portuguese army that fought in the Flanders in World War I.
He worked in the newspaper O Século and in the magazine of the same journal – Illustração Portugueza – and he also worked in two other magazines – O Occidente and Panorama.
